Girl Scout Troop 3581 hosted a community cleanup day in Ocean Springs

Girl Scout Troop 3581 of Ocean Springs, along with the Department of Marine Resources, hosted a community cleanup day on Saturday at the Hellmer’s Lane Coastal Birding Trail.

The bridge and birding trail were affected by previous hurricanes and the Girl Scouts wanted to help beautify the area as part of their Bronze Award, which is the highest honor a Girl Scout junior can achieve.

The girls started planting flowers at their homes to bring to the trail and plant in hopes that they will grow.

The girls also cleaned up trash and other debris on the trail. Girl Scouts Abby Carroll and Taylor Douglas tell News 25 they are raising money to help go towards this project. “We made stickers to hand out like ‘leave no trace’ stickers and we have been helping like dig up all the roots, dig up trees. We have been helping make new flowers like new plants to grow and we have been helping raising money from Girl Scout cookies. Yea so we sold Girl Scout cookies to get money to go into this project, yes.”

The Girl Scouts say they are looking forward to seeing the finished product.
