Getting fit for the New Year
2018 is only three days away and that means it is that time of the year again to make a New Year’s resolution. Getting in shape is always on top of many people’s list.
News 25 stopped by Planet Fitness in Gulfport to talk with some fitness experts about how to get started on your fitness journey.
Many people greet the New Year with a vow to get in the gym and start shedding those extra holiday pounds. Planet Fitness Regional Manager Danny Buford said, “This is when we have our big rush. It’s very exciting for our staff and all of our members here. We look forward to this all year long.”
The journey to fitness can be tough, but Planet Fitness Trainer Preston Johnson says that half of the battle is just showing up. “My advice would be come first and once you get here try and be as consistent as you can. A lot of times people get frustrated and they end up stopping and if you stop then you won’t see any progress or it will take you longer to see the progress. I would say consistency is the most important thing.”
Whether your fitness goals are toning up or losing weight, the first step is as simple as hopping on a treadmill for only 30 minutes a day, just to get moving and get your heart rate up. “Start with some cardio, maybe 20 to 30 minutes of cardio a day. Eventually what you want to do is mix everything together. You want to do a mix of strength training and cardio. Like I said, that 30 minute window is pretty good. What you want to do is keep your heart rate elevated to a certain level and by doing that what you do is burn calories. You burn calories, you lose weight.”
Fueling your body with the right food is also crucial.
