‘Get out and Vote’ Weekend

The congregations at First Missionary Baptist Church in Gulfport and Biloxi got a special sermon Sunday morning in light of the upcoming election.

Reverend Nelson Rivers is a Civil Rights activist who is passionate about the power in voting. He is the vice president of religious affairs with the National Action Network.

This service was put on by the NAACP, South Mississippi Civic Organization, and the Gulfport Civic Club.

It was a part of a community wide crusade for what they called ‘get out and vote’ weekend. “These rivers have the body and the DNA of my people. So we have to vote not because we feel guilty, but because we are so proud that somebody thought enough of us to give their life so I could exercise this franchise. So why would you not vote in 2018? And all we got to deal with, you better go vote. America is in a war over its very soul.”
