Georgia Delegates Visit the Coast

A delegation from the Republic of Georgia is down here on the Mississippi Coast soaking up all they can about our local economies, government, and tourism strategies. It’s all part of an open world exchange program sponsored by the Steps Coalition.
The five delegates received a warm welcome at the Moss Point Welcome Center. It’s just one of several stops on their week-long tour here in South Mississippi. They’re soaking up all they can about our culture and government. Kutaisi Head of Foreign Relations and International Projects David Megrelishvili said, “We’ve had some meetings like today with the mayor. We’ll meet some local communities, talking with them about the issues they are currently solving. Interaction between government and society and how they come together for better solutions.”
The delegation is going through some changes with their government in their own country and they are looking at incorporating more democratic ways into their government system, taking cues from different municipalities here in Mississippi. Mayor Billy Broomfield said, “The real positive that that I got out of this meeting is the opportunity to create a partnership and perhaps so much so that I’ve been invited to come to their county to look at their form of government which I’m excited about.”
The Democratic Republic of Georgia is southeast of the Ukraine and northeast of Turkey. Like our coast, Georgia sits on a massive body of water, the Black Sea.
For over ten years now, the Coast has been recovering from the devastation of Katrina, something the delegation is interested in because they can relate. Group Coordinator Nicholas Samkharadze said, “We had flooding recently three months ago that cost the lives of several people. Disaster risk reduction is one of the issues that we are interested in and also how to prevent the future disaster.”
Mayor Broomfield said, “It gave us an opportunity to understand the other side of the world. Hopefully the things that we can do will be emulated in a productive manner that will allow them to be as successful as we are in this country.”
The delegation will be touring with other local government leaders before returning home.
