George County Deputy Bobby Daffin dies of COVID complications
The Gulf Coast is mourning the loss of George County Sheriff’s Deputy Bobby Daffin, who passed away at the age of 37 Thursday night from COVID-19 complications.
George County Sheriff Keith Havard said, “Great officer, great deputy. He’s been here for 14 years between us and George and Greene County, but more than that he was a great father to his child and a great child to his parents, always kind to the public and everyone he came across.”
Doug Adams with the George County Sheriff’s Office said, “He loved his daughter and his family and law enforcement and the people of George and Greene counties and he is definitely going to be missed.”
A benefit lunch for Deputy Bobby Daffin was held, raising money to cover medical expenses and the care for his young daughter. Residents from across the Coast showed their support, even if they don’t personally know Bobby simply wanting to Back the Blue. Moss Point resident Betty Roach said, “They help us in so many ways.”
Six hundred plates of red beans and rice were prepared by the Biloxi Bacon Brigade, each sold for $10 and plenty of donations were collected. Biloxi Police Chief John Miller said, “Before we were even unloaded, people started making donations and we hadn’t even started cooking yet.”
“We started around 6 a.m. and I had people driving by, giving cash money saying we want to help and we had a little over $1,000 by 6 o’clock.”
James Hill with George County Sheriff’s Office said, “The George County people love one another and our neighboring counties love us as well. We don’t mind getting out in the community and helping one another.”
Law enforcement agencies across South Mississippi attended the benefit as the loss of an officer affects them all equally. Harrison County Sheriff Troy Peterson said, “We work with these guys daily on investigations and different things. We don’t have borders on our counties. You get to know everybody. So, when you have a death in law enforcement, it affects everybody around us.”
