George County baseball alum Trevor McDonald makes MLB debut with San Francisco Giants

You can accomplish a lot of different things in five years! Earn a college degree and even a masters, learn a new skill or a new language, or simply achieve your childhood dreams and play Major League Baseball. Learn more about George County alum Trevor McDonald, who did exactly that.

“It’s definitely always been a dream,” said Trevor McDonald. “It’s kind of surreal right now because it all happens so fast, but now that it’s getting closer, you get more phone calls and stuff. It’s crazy.”

That was George County’s Trevor McDonald talking about the possibility of being drafted in 2019 while preparing for high school playoffs. During his senior year, he produced a 1.78 ERA, 105 strikeouts, and was throwing over 94 miles per hour on the mound.

Five years later and not much has changed, except for the fact he’s living that dream he used to always talk about. On Sunday, the right handed pitcher and Giants number 12 prospect was called up for the 132nd game of the year.

In the words of San Francisco’s manager Bob Melvin, his major league debut was a great one.

“It was great, and you know there were some nerves involved. Even warming up for your first big league game and getting a call like that for the last day of the season knowing the potential is probably there for you to pitch,” said Giants Manager Bob Melvin. “The first few pitches are the ones that get you a little bit and once he got a couple strikes, it’s off to the races and he pitched really well. No hits, one walk, and he’s got a sinker that keeps the ball on the ground and he threw really well.  They’re a lot of things to like about it. Go home for the off-season, have him pitch three innings in a major league game and did really well. It’ll be good for his confidence.”

Along with throwing a hitless inning, McDonald also recorded his first major league strikeout. The best part is, he did it in front of his parents and uncle.

Congratulations Trevor, and welcome to the show!
