GenSea holds summer internship showcase for students
Fifteen high-school students from across the Gulf Coast showcased the USM GenSea summer internship experiences today at the USM Long Beach campus.
The internships were all housed across USM’s coastal operations and immersed students in fields such as hydrography and ocean flood mapping, ocean engineering, computer modeling, marine biology, and aquaculture.
The students were able to set up tables with PowerPoints and boards full of their progress and work to share with the other students and families.
These 15 students were picked from a pool of about 50 applicants, all looking for the opportunity to dip their toes in these fields of work. Intern Walker Lyons said, “It’s nice you know because it’s just an accomplishment I guess because we’ve done a lot of testing and a lot of work on it and it’s just an accomplishment I guess.”
Intern Sallie Ann Schmidt said, “It’s really tedious and it feels good to show people that we actually contributed to something because we did. It’s actually in there and it’s not gonna leave.”
Next year, GenSea is planning to expand the program to involve more students in even more fields of marine study.
