GCRL Donates Oysters to Ocean Springs High School
A partnership between USM’s Gulf Coast Research Laboratory and Ocean Springs High School allows students to research and understand marine life and preservation along the Coast.
Today, the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory donated more than 750,000 juvenile oysters to the school’s aquaculture program. Students will have the opportunity to grow and feed the oysters while keeping logs and growth charts to research development.
This is an opportunity for students to better understand and help restore the oyster population on the Gulf Coast. Ocean Springs High School senior Nathan Risley said, “We have these people that go in and fish too much. They over fish the waters and dredge over the things that oysters live on. For us, we’re trying to restore those places that they destroyed and hopefully get a little life back up in the sound.”
Ocean Springs High School is one of only two schools in South Mississippi with this type of program.
