Gay Marriage Ban in Mississippi Could be Overturned

Gay men, women, and their allies have gathered in Jackson to support each other as they fight for marriage equality. People from across the state have converged on Jackson as they await the judge’s decision in a case to determine if the ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional in Mississippi.

The feeling has been overwhelmingly positive and many feel that the judge will find in favor of the plaintiffs, which are gay Mississippi couples. One of those couples lives in Pass Christian with their two children, and spoke to News 25 about the emotions of the last few days.

Becky Bickett says, "There has been a lot of positive energy surrounding the entire event. We have hundreds of people who have sent messages of support from all across the country, as well as people who showed up in Jackson on the steps of the courthouse to cheer us on as we walked out of the courthouse. It’s been a very overwhelming experience."

Even if overturned, the decision will likely be appealed, but activists would still consider it a major victory for equal rights.
