Gautier defeats East Central 14-7 in Week Zero test

High School football is back on the Mississippi Gulf Coast as Gautier hosted East Central for their 2026 jamboree.

The Gautier Gators opened Week Zero with a strong defensive performance and two explosive touchdowns, defeating the East Central Hornets 14-7 at the Swamp.

Gautier wasted little time finding the scoreboard.

Early in the game, East Central lost the ball on a transfer, and senior defensive lineman Landon Beasley pounced on the loose ball to give the Gators possession. Gautier quickly turned the turnover into points.

Just 13 seconds into the game, junior quarterback Tylan Moore handed the ball to Latrell Pogue, who spun away from a defender, raced toward the sideline and outran the Hornets’ defense for a touchdown. The extra point was good, giving Gautier a 7-0 lead.

East Central responded through the air, with senior quarterback Kash Litton connecting with junior Kyler Seymour to move the chains. However, senior Kingston McNeil came up with a big tackle for loss on the very next play, and the Hornets eventually turned the ball over on downs.

East Central’s defense then created a turnover of its own. Carter Green and Lucas Smith forced the Gator ball loose, with Beau Davis recovering for the Hornets. East Central was unable to capitalize, however, and the ball eventually returned to Gautier.

The Gators struck again on their next opportunity.

Moore delivered a pass to Devon Garrett, who shook off a defender and turned on the speed. With a key block from Watson, Garrett raced into the end zone for another explosive Gautier touchdown.

The Gators added the extra point to extend their lead to 14-0.

East Central finally got on the scoreboard with a touchdown before rain interrupted the game, cutting the deficit to 14-7. The Hornets would get no closer, as Gautier held on for the Week Zero victory.

Gautier will open the regular season next Friday when it welcomes George County to the Swamp. East Central will hit the road to take on Greene County.
