Gas Prices Are Down, But Taxes May Go Up

Gas prices are at their lowest in years, but now some legislators are proposing a gas tax increase.

The current federal gas tax is about 18.5¢ and has not been raised since 1993. Republican Senator, Bob Corker from Tennessee, is proposing a 12¢ per gallon increase over the next two years. In addition to these federal taxes, each state also adds their own tax. Mississippi adds an extra 18¢ per gallon. Coast drivers feel that an additional tax is unneeded.

Mark Alley, owner of North Bay Heating & Air, says, "It’s crept up quite a bit since I started driving in the mid-70s. It’s gone up ever since. I’m glad to see it come down, but I know it’s short lived."

Alex Welch, a D’Iberville High School student, says, "I do think it’s absurd. If they’re having these giant profits, then why are we overpaying for it?"

To make this proposal more appealing to conservatives, the proposal would also lower other taxes.
