Fundraiser to benefit home repairs for local veteran

A spaghetti dinner fundraiser for a well-known hitchhiker and veteran in Ocean Springs will take place Saturday evening.

Alfred Harrelson, who often goes by Mr. Al, receives rides from helpful residents in the Ocean Springs area to run errands for himself and his wife and even has a Facebook group dedicated to giving him lifts.

A few weeks ago, he was struck by a car and must go through physical therapy. To make his life easier by assisting him with home repairs, the VFW 5699 in Ocean Springs will be selling spaghetti dinners for $8 a plate to raise funds for Mr. Al.

Event Coordinator Lele Bremen said, “The VFW, that’s what we do. We do take care of our fellow veterans and the community. So, it started out as just an individual and it’s really rolled into a VFW thing. I mean, the entire community has stepped up and has just adopted this family into their hearts and it’s amazing.”

The fundraiser starts at 6 p.m. Saturday at VFW 5699 in Ocean Springs.
