Four Coast teams playing for volleyball state titles

Championship weekend is set for high school volleyball featuring four South State champions from six Coastal counties.

On Monday, Vancleave won a marathon match over East Central in five sets and that was only the beginning.

Resurrection Catholic, Our Lady Academy, and Pass Christian all went on to punch their tickets on Tuesday.

It doesn’t get more dramatic than the Lady Pirates and their five-set win over Stone. Both schools vying for their first-ever state title match appearance, but it was the Pass scoring five out of the last six points to secure its date with destiny. Pass Christian Head Volleyball Coach Kendra Bensch said, “Well, I tried not to cry too much because I know we still have one more step that we want to go and we definitely want to make that goal for us as well to bring home a 4A state title. But it does my heart good and I love these girls with every bit of my heart. And coaching is one of those things that you just have to love it because it doesn’t always have its positives how you have to take a little bit of everything with it, but this group has really come together and it did my heart good to see every single girl enjoy this, every single girl gives every ounce of energy they had, whether they were on the floor or cheering on the side, it did not matter. They gave every bit of themselves to this team.”

The Pirates are in the midst of their first playoff appearance since 2013, having won their first post-season match since 2011.

Here’s the full slate of games on Saturday:

  • Resurrection Catholic vs. Hickory Flat at noon
  • Our Lady Academy vs. Alcorn Central at 3 p.m.
  • Pass Christian vs. Pontotoc at 3 p.m.
  • Vancleave vs Lafayette at 6 p.m.

RCS, OLA, and Vancleave are playing at Clinton while Pass takes the court at Ridgeland.
