Former Southern Miss Baseball Coach Corky Palmer passes away

The University of Southern Mississippi family mourns the loss of Golden Eagle Baseball coaching icon Corky Palmer.

Palmer played baseball at Southern Miss and started at catcher his freshman year.

He graduated from USM in 1977, but that is just the beginning of his story.

Corky returned to his alma mater as the assistant coach in 1985, took a job as the head coach of Meridian Community College in 1987, and then returned to Southern Miss as the head coach in 1998.

After being the head coach for 12 seasons, his biggest accomplishment was bringing the Golden Eagles to their only College World Series appearance in 2009.

Palmer died at age 68.
