Former Shucker Corbin Burnes wins 2021 NL Cy Young award

They say the bigger the setback, bigger the comeback and you’d be hard-pressed to find a better comeback story than that of former Biloxi Shucker Corbin Burnes, now your 2021 National League Cy Young Award winner.

This afternoon, Burnes beat out Zach Wheeler of the Phillies and Max Scherzer of the Dodgers to become the third Brewers pitcher to ever take home the honors.

This coming just two years after he was demoted three times during a 2019 season that saw him finish with an unsightly 8.82 ERA.

Burnes re-invited himself with a cut fastball and went on to dominate the 2021 campaign to the tune of a league leading 2.43 ERA.

The former fourth round pick also led the majors in strikeout rate with 234 in 167 innings of work as well as strikeouts to walks, FIP, and percentage of barrels.

Late in the season, Burnes was even part of Milwaukee’s first no-hitter since 1987.
