Former Admirals Daniel Keating, Alex Nelms representing at USM
Other former local standouts in the news this week are Gulfport alumni Daniel Keating and Alex Nelms, both of who caught up with News 25 at Southern Miss Baseball Media Day.
The 2016 Conference USA Tournament MVP Daniel Keating is ready to embark on his senior campaign while Nelms says he can’t believe he’s already a sophomore.
The Gulfport USM pipeline is unique with the league championship now being played so close to home at MGM Park for the second straight year.
Even back in Hattiesburg, these two Golden Eagles still feel the love from their Admiral family. “Being that it’s only like an hour and 15 minutes away it’s great having the support, and everybody from back home keeps up with me and Nelms and everybody from the community is behind us which is awesome. They always show a lot of love and support when we go back home,” said Keating.
Nelms said, “I mean Gulfport is a special place to me for sure, and I think Hattiesburg has grown into that place that’s kind of, I don’t know. I went from a good baseball school to a really good baseball school, high school to college. I’m thankful for my past, but I’m really glad I’m here.”
Another former Golden Eagle Chase Scott was a volunteer coach at Gulfport last year. He’s now an assistant coach at East Mississippi Community College for 2018.
