Flag Debate Continues in Jackson
Today in Jackson, the battle lines are drawn and debate rages on.
Does the Mississippi state flag represent state pride and southern heritage or black slavery and racist traditions? Members of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, along with activists, say it’s time for the flag to be replaced, even if it’s retired to a museum.
Members and supporters of the SCLC gathered at the Capitol today. They vowed to continue the debate.
Charles Steel, president of SCLC, said, “Non-violently, we oppose it. Non-violently, we are going to march, demonstrate all over this land and we are saying that no more, no more will we be silent and let our people be infringed upon slavery.”
