Flag commission delays vote on final design for state flag

Today, the commission to redesign the Mississippi state flag has delayed their vote for the final five flag designs until Tuesday, August 18th.

Previously, the commission met on July 28th at the two Mississippi museums, the Museum of Mississippi History and Mississippi Civil Rights Museum.

The commission had received nearly 3,000 submissions. After narrowing down to 147 submissions this week, they met today and selected the final nine design proposals. That will be reduced to the final five at their next meeting next Tuesday at 8 a.m.  Mississippi Department of Archives and History Director Katie Blount said, “MDAH and individual commissioners as Judge Anderson mentioned have received lots and lots and lots of communications from the public. It’s been wonderful. We’re gonna talk about a few brand new ones this morning but for the most part they’ve been added. So I feel confident that all of the flags that qualified are on the gallery and were seen by commissioners.”

The final five flags will be placed on the MDAH website for public comment.
