Five dead, one injured in crash involving train and van on Highway 49 in Stone County
STONE COUNTY, Miss. (WXXV)– Law enforcement officials are investigating a crash involving a train and van in northern Stone County.
Stone County Sheriff Todd Stewart tells WXXV the crash happened around 1 p.m. Friday at Pump Branch Road, which is just off Highway 49.
Stewart says the van was traveling westbound towards Highway 49 when it collided with a northbound freight train. The van was pushed roughly 500 yards down the tracks.
According to Mississippi Highway Patrol, there were six occupants in the van. Authorities confirm five of the people in the vehicle died. These victims have been identified by Stone County Coroner Wayne Flurry as:
- 26-year-old Ryan C. Peterson, a Harrison County Sheriff’s Office corrections officer
- 23-year-old Demarcus Perkins
- 45-year-old Kristina Carver
- 22-year-old Emley Chamblee, Carver’s daughter
- 20-year-old Sarabeth Chamblee, Carver’s daughter
A 23-year-old female was life-flighted to a hospital in New Orleans. Her condition is currently unknown.
