Fish Frys begin for the Lenten season

The start of the Lenten season for many means Fish Fry Friday.

Many churches along the Coast began frying fish today, getting the grease hot for the religious period of Lent.

This is due to many Catholics and Christians abstaining from meat on Fridays.

Over in Biloxi this afternoon, Our Mother of Sorrows Parish is celebrating its 110th year as a pillar in the community.

Members of the church say the fish fry allows them to raise funds for its community-based projects and workforce development throughout the year. Cheryl Thompson with Our Mother of Sorrows Parish said, “People still call like before Lent, and they’ll even call after Lent. They just love the good fish here that we do.”

Angela Griffin with Our Mother of Sorrows Parish said, “Usually, people associate Lent with giving up something. But you know, Father, always reminding us is also about service, making sure that we’re doing something giving back, you know. So, when you think about what’s happening today it’s nothing more than acknowledging what Christ has done and his love for us. Showing our love for the community.”
