Fish fry for Sophia Myers

Seven-year-old Sophia Myers has returned home, feeling well enough to attend a fish fry and silent auction held this weekend. All the proceeds from the benefit go to the Myers family as they continue to battle Sophia’s inoperable brain tumor.
Just five months ago, seven-year-old Sophia Myers was a seemingly healthy and active first grader who enjoyed dancing, playing soccer, and hanging out with friends. Now, instead of playing like most first graders, Sophia spends her time in hospital rooms, fighting to overcome a rare brain tumor.
The struggle of trying to stay positive is not the only hardship for the Myers family. The financial burden of the travel back and forth from home to Atlanta, Georgia, where Sophia is receiving treatment, is starting to weigh heavy on the Myers family. Angel Myers said, “There’s just not a lot of expertise or resources for what she has and that’s what it is so hard and so expensive to get her treatment.”
Many friends and family members of the Myers have gathered together multiple times over the past five months for fundraisers to benefit the family. When Sophia returned home Saturday she was welcomed with open arms by loved ones who rallied together once again to show their support. Family Friend Kerry Atkinson said, “I have been friends with both Angel and Josh since high school. They are an amazing family and Sophia is an amazing little girl. We just want to do everything we can to help save her life.”
Sophia is part of a clinical trial at Emory Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Since her diagnosis in February she has had radiation, began taking an experimental drug, and has had a shunt surgically placed in her head for drainage. Angel Myers said, “We are just so truly grateful for the community. It’s beyond anything we ever imagined and we are so grateful. They help tremendously and you just don’t know until you are faced with it.”
