First responders keeping Coast safe on New Year’s Day

While most of us are resting up on New Year’s Day, first responders have to be ready for anything.
Hospitals have to be fully staffed in the event of an emergency. Local police, EMS officials, and firefighters are working to make sure the Coast is safe. First responders tell News 25 while New Year’s Day is typically a quiet day on the Coast, New Year’s Eve is a likely night for car accidents, alcohol-related incidents, and accidents involving fireworks or celebratory gunfire.
Ocean Springs firefighters say the biggest thing they’re watching out for this New Year’s is the cold weather. Ocean Springs Battalion Chief Tim Heath said, “With the cold weather, slips and falls are probably going to be more common and just want to remind everyone with their space heaters, not get things too close to them, be careful with those and also fire places, people tend to put more wood on them than they probably need.”
Ocean Springs firefighters say with today’s frigid temperatures checking on elderly neighbors is also a good idea.
