First-ever Southeastern Dyslexia Summit held today
The Lighthouse Academy for Dyslexia hosted its very first Southeastern Dyslexia Summit today.
The summit was held at the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino and hosted about 150 teachers from across the Coast.
The teachers were then taught about dyslexia and reading development in grades K through 12. Attendees were given the necessary knowledge to identify characteristics of dyslexia and explore how dyslexics think and perceive.
The event also featured addresses by nationally recognized speakers, dyslexia therapists, and other influential experts. Lighthouse Academy Executive Director Traci Barrientos said, “The teachers work very hard, and everyone wants to do the right thing, but they don’t always have the tools that they need for the job, and so our job is to come alongside them and support them with the tools necessary in the classroom which is knowledge.”
Keynote speaker Amie Dean said, “This summit is not only teaching teachers about the things to look for with kids who have dyslexia or learning disabilities but also how to respond to the behaviors that often surface because of the disabilities that they have.”
The organization plans to continue this summit yearly to spread more knowledge on dyslexia.
