Fireworks ignite debris in garbage can

The last 24 hours have been non-stop for fire crews across the Coast. Harrison County Fire Marshal Pat Sullivan says his department has kept busy responding to fires related to fireworks.

Shortly after 2 a.m., fire units were called to a home off Canal Road for a fire that started when fireworks debris caught on fire when it was in a trash can next to the home.

Homeowners were alerted by a neighbor returning from a New Year’s Eve party. That’s when the flames climbed the outside of the home and was burning into the attic.

Fire units also responded to several fire calls reporting woods and brush fires due to fireworks.

Chief Sullivan is urging everyone to take safety precautions when using fireworks.
