Fireworks can trigger PTSD

Tonight, millions will celebrate the countdown to the New Year with family, friends, and fireworks.

For some people, like veterans, the loud booming can spark something much deeper. The sound of fireworks often triggers memories of war for those who suffer from PTSD.

Kevin Cuttill with Crusaders for Veterans says if you know if any of your neighbors are veterans and you plan on shooting fireworks, you can make a huge difference by simply letting your neighbor know ahead of time. “If you are shooting them off and you know you have a veteran in your neighborhood go tell them that you are going to shoot off the big boomers. Let them know, give them a heads up because a lot of times, if a veteran is involved they come out and watch then you are anticipating it. You are working with it, you are good to go. Be a Good Samaritan, a good human being, a considerate human being and just let everybody know.”

If you are a veteran who suffers from PTSD, be aware that fireworks will be going off tonight and try to prepare yourself the best you can.
