Fire officials share tips for the cold weather

HARRISON COUNTY, Miss. (WXXV)- As Daylight Savings Time comes, it is the perfect time to check your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

A quick test could save lives. Fire officials say alarms are your first defense in a fire or gas leak, but they only work if the batteries are good and the unit is still working properly.

Experts recommend testing alarms every month, changing batteries twice a year, and replacing the unit every ten years.

As temperatures drop, many are turning to space heaters to stay warm. Officials remind you to keep them at least three feet away from anything that can burn and never leave them on overnight.

Taking these simple steps can help keep your family safe this season.
