Fire Departments Donate Supplies

The South Mississippi community is known to come together for others in their time of need and we’re seeing another example of that. News 25’s Katarina Luketich shows us how Coast fire departments are offering a helping hand to their brothers in uniform up north.
Hosing it down and scrubbing it clean all for a good cause, members of the Biloxi Fire Department are putting the finishing touches on a 1990 truck they plan on driving to North Mississippi on Wednesday. Their mission is to donate it to the Three Fork Volunteer Fire Department, who lost their entire fleet in the recent string of tornadoes. We on the Coast are no strangers to what it feels like to need help. Deputy Chief of Training John Jennings said, “If you were here for Katrina, anyone knows that we had tons of volunteers come through, especially firefighters and police officers. There’s no way we can repay it back all that. So, the best thing we can do is try to pay it forward.”
Biloxi firemen aren’t the only ones pitching in. They’ve collected supplies from departments all across the Coast to take up north with them. Gulfport Fire Department Training Chief Tim Holliman said, “It’s about the brotherhood. Being a fireman, anytime we see another department in need and if we have surplus of something left over that we could donate, we’re more than happy to give that to them.”
This isn’t just a Coast wide effort, those making the trip to Three Forks tomorrow will be stopping at departments all throughout Mississippi to pick up supplies to bring to the volunteer fire department in need. “That’s one of the best things that happens in a time of disaster, is the way people truly put aside all their differences that they may have and truly come together,” said Jennings.
As they wash the truck and load supplies, these firefighters are happy to help in any way they can, knowing it just as well could be our community in need at any time, as it has been before.
Biloxi firemen are also planning a trip back to North Mississippi as early as next week to help aid in relief efforts for those tornado devastated communities.
