Festival de Hispano Pascagoula celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month

It was a fiesta to remember in Pascagoula this weekend as the city celebrated its Hispanic heritage and culture.

Mid-September marks the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month and what better way to kick it off with the annual Festival de Hispano Pascagoula on Mexican Independence Day. Danielys Borges with J’s Boutique said, “It’s good for Pascagoula to know about the different cultures that there is around us.”

Real Estate Agent Martha Ramos said, “This month is really important for us. So, as you see, it’s everybody here is speaking Spanish and I mean it’s super nice here to have more people come here and show their business and we are really growing.”

It was also a chance for the public to interact with Hispanic businesses and see what other Hispanic services are out there. “It’s been good promoting everything and selling everything. Making people know our Latin culture and our history and everything.”

“I can’t explain how happy I am. I’ve been walking around seeing a lot of businesses that I wasn’t aware that actually exists here around Mississippi. So, it’s really nice to have help in Spanish also.”

The festival had fun activities for everyone in attendance. Terrell Washington said, “You know, they got food trucks, people dancing, kids dancing, love just all around here. Very fun.”

Makayla Lodridgue says her favorite part was: “watching the dancing and getting his face painted because normally he doesn’t sit still, but he listened.”

Tents around the festival were serving tasty delicacies like carne asada, empanadas, and other savory treats. Ramos says events like this brings awareness to Hispanic heritage. “Hispanic people, it’s been growing just that much lately here. So, it’s really good to have these kinds of events. If you swing by Mississippi, you know that you have a really big Hispanic community right here to help, ready to help.”
