Feral cats an issue in Harrison County

Feral cats are continuing to be a problem in Harrison County.

During the Harrison County Board of Supervisors meeting this morning, a citizen took time to tell the board that his yard, as well as his neighbor’s yard, has turned into a litter box due to about 30 feral cats wandering in the area.

Due to the uncontrollable amount of cats, he called the county’s animal control officer to pick up one cat he located, but he says he was told they couldn’t take it due to cats currently not being accepted at the Humane Society.

Resident Alan Weatherford is now asking the board of supervisors to take time to revise their current agreement with the Humane Society. “If you have an agreement with Harrison County and it’s to accept animals, animals including cats and dogs there, we cannot continue to live the way we’re living there. Something has got to give.”

Fixin’ the Coast is a nonprofit organization that aims to control the feral cat community through trap and neutering, but they cannot accept and fix the cats because they can’t be returned to the same area where they were captured.
