Fed Up with 50th Pushes for Funding of MAEP

One local grass roots effort called Fed Up with 50th is calling for the state legislature to fully fund the Mississippi Adequate Education Program (M.A.E.P.)

Legislators say education is a major portion of the budget and this year was able to allocate $300 million more to school districts statewide. Fully funding M.A.E.P. would require the state to go into their rainy day funds, only allowing enough to fully fund it for one year. Although they wish more money could go to education, legislators tell News 25 they’re doing the best with what they have.

Charles Busby, member of House Education Committee, says, “K-12 education is such a huge part of our state budget, over 40% of our state budget, and we have certain other allocations that go to k-12 education.”

At the end of this legislative session, the House Education Committee plans on meeting with all major educational bodies to discuss exactly what the financial needs are.
