Fatal train vs. car collision in Gulfport

A Gulfport man has died after the truck he was driving was struck by a train this morning.

Just around 8 a.m., 81-year-old Thomas Baker was driving his truck at the railroad crossing on Texas Avenue when he collided with the train and suffered serious injuries. He later died from those injuries.

Gulfport Police Chief Leonard Papania tells News 25 Baker attempted to beat the train which is when the truck he was driving was struck by the train, flipping the vehicle off the tracks and causing it to roll over. “Historically we have had other issues at this intersection. Today’s tragedy could have been avoided.”
