Fast growing app ‘Threads’ aims to rival Twitter

There is a hot new app on the block that is picking up conversations fast. It’s called ‘Threads.’

Last week, META, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, launched its most recent social media app. Many experts agree that Threads was launched to rival Twitter with its similar text-based functions.

The app is becoming the fastest growing social media platform in its initial launch. Threads has amassed over 100 million users in a week, with many of them coming from Instagram. Other users have decided to download the app because of Twitter’s controversial changes led by CEO Elon Musk.

Southern Miss Chief Communication Officer Jim Coll spoke to News 25 on why users are making the switch to Threads and how Meta plans to differ its atmosphere from Twitter. “There is some dissatisfaction with Twitter right now, mostly related to some of the functionality and recent changes to that platform. So, people are using it in a similar way to what they have for Twitter. I think that Meta is going to be very intentional about making sure that it is a community that’s a little different.”

Though there are numerous similarities between the two apps, Coll says there are differences. For the time being, he is uncertain if the app can dethrone Twitter as one of the most used apps for communications.
