Farm to Table

From farm to table, Harrison County students learn the tricks of the trade when it comes to planting, growing, and harvesting vegetables.
In partnership with the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department, about 50 students are utilizing the county farm for this farm to table national effort. This program allows students to pick what food they want to grow, as well as nourish the seeds through the next few months.
Sheriff Troy Peterson tells News 25 farming has become a lost art and hopes these kids find passion in creating something from scratch. “It teaches them a trade. It teaches them something else besides looking at an iPad every day. If they learn this and get into this and they figure out this is what I like. I like doing this. They can provide for their families. It’s another way to support their family and they can figure out what they want to do in their life.”
High schools participating include Pass Christian, Harrison County, and D’Iberville. Kids can either take the crops home or give them back to the community at the farm.
