Family Wants Answers after Flood Damage
For the most part, the Coast has dried out from recent storms and flooding over the past month. Residents in one area of north Gulfport have growing concerns over the next move for flood damage from county officials. News 25’s Laurene Callander reports.
It’s been a long, bumpy and wet road for the Saucier family in north Gulfport over the past month. Amy Saucier said, “We actually had water underneath our house. The driveway was four foot under water. It was just horrible.”
This is the view from their Mark West Road home after the April 28th downpour, as flood waters reached new heights then came more storms and flooding. “You have the water coming from the south of us, coming into the creek with all the beaver dams and the downed trees in the creek, the water’s just backing up on us,” said Saucier.
One of the Saucier family’s main concerns is a metal sheet that they put over their broken driveway. Elderly grandparents live on this property and they’re worried if emergency services need to come get them, they’re going to have a rough time traveling over the bumpy surface. “An ambulance isn’t going to want to come over that to get in here to get them out of here. We need help getting this resolved so we don’t have any more issues,” said Saucier.
Amy Saucier has a log of all the calls she’s made to county and FEMA officials. She says while there’s been a lot of talk, she has yet to see any action. Harrison County Supervisor Angel Kibler-Middleton said, “It’s coming on to private property. It’s coming from other properties around. So, there’s got to be a solution. I requested to get some federal funding to try to see where it’s coming from, what the cause is and how we can fix it.”
