Family Mardi Gras Celebration in Biloxi

Children showed off their home-made floats and dazzling costumes in Biloxi today.

The Family Mardi Gras Celebration was held under the I-110 overpass at Howard and Hopkins this afternoon.

This was a way for families and their children to celebrate Lundi Gras after the city’s Children’s Walking Parade was canceled earlier this month due to rain.

City officials knew children would be eager to show off their floats and enjoy a little pre-Mardi Gras art activities and refreshments to keep the good times rolling. Biloxi Historical Administrator Bill Raymond said, “Ms. Ruth Hunt and I started this 25 years ago to bring the family atmosphere that Biloxi is known for its Mardi Gras. We wanted to help to foster that and to get children involved in Mardi Gras and understand more than just standing on the side of the road for a parade. We wanted them to know what it felt like to be part of that.”

Trophies for best costume were awarded by age groups as well as trophies and cash prizes for large and small floats.
