Family Literacy Program
Climb CDC’s Family Enrichment Program and Goodwill of South Mississippi are teaming up to fight illiteracy on the Coast.
The United State Department of Education found 29 percent of adults over the age of 16 read at an eighth grade reading level. The Climb CDC Family Enrichment Center and Goodwill are partnering to buck this trend and educate families across the Coast. Their new family literacy program hopes to not only increase the literacy of children but also help their parents at the same time. Goodwill Director of Mission Services and Quality Assurance Mitch Bauman said, “Well, this is pretty new for Goodwill. We’ve had our own project going with the GED for years. We’ve decided we can better use our resources by getting out in the community and helping people with that basic skill of reading. It brings parents and their children together. If the parents can read, we can help teach them to teach the children. If the parents have trouble reading themselves, we can help everybody. It’s just a win-win situation.”
