Family Enrichment Center Opens in Gulfport
Climb CDC has spent the last nine years trying to reduce the cycle of generational poverty here on the Coast.
Climb CDC, along with help from the mayor and the Gulfport Police Department, cut the ribbon on their new family enrichment center.
AmeriCorps member Sydney Roberson is already enjoying the new center that’s only two streets away from where she lives. She tells News 25 the center will give people in the community a place to turn to. “It makes me feel good to know that our school is helping more people than just students and youth because they don’t know who to go to and they feel like they don’t have anybody.”
The new center on Old Pass Road is equipped with a playground as well as an indoor multi-purpose room.
Dwayne Cooper, who is in his second year with Climb CDC, said, “It was a big help that Climb came and opened it. Because now kids can come here, we have foosball, we have air hockey, and we have Wii’s for the kids. You know, we have everything here.”
The center will use classrooms and computer labs to teach classes that will create individual development plans for families. CEO Lori West said, “We’ll be having adult literacy courses. We’ll be having parenting courses where parents can interact here with the young people. They won’t just be in a classroom, taking notes; there’ll actually be some real, live hands-on parenting classes.”
Climb CDC is funding the center through many sources, including federal grants.
The Family Enrichment Center will do more than just keep youths and families off the streets. The Gulfport Police believe it’ll help keep them out of their jails and in the community.
Officers will participate in multiple programs with students and their families. Chief Leonard Papania said, “If you provided opportunities and skilled training, those desires can really turn into something. And all of this will lead to reduction of crime.”
