Fallen Firefighters Remembered

Thirty years ago on this day, Biloxi lost two brave firemen while they were battling a house fire.
Today Kurt Jacquet Sr. and Carl Ohr were honored by friends, loved ones, and the Biloxi Fire Department at their grave sites.
Fire Chief Joe Boney addressed the crowd about how the department has improved since the tragedy and safety measures have changed for the better.
Family shared personal stories about the two men and their ultimate sacrifice back in 1986 and what new firemen can learn from their losses.
Sarah Ohr Murphy, sister of Carl Ohr, said, “We always think that this kind of thing doesn’t happen to us, but unfortunately we have learned the hard way that it can happen here at any time. Hopefully those firefighters will go home and hug their children a little harder each night and morning and kiss their wives and you know be sure to express to them how much they love him.”
Now at each fire, a battalion chief is positioned at a vantage point where he can direct and monitor the entire scene, always aware of the location of every firefighter.
