“Fall in Love” with the Purr-Fect Pet at the Humane Society of South Mississippi
In lieu of a set adoption fee (normally $25-$50), H.S.S.M. will simply ask for a donation when an adoptive family chooses a new four-legged friend. H.S.S.M. is kicking off the autumn season with this “Fall In Love” adoption special, as an influx of homeless kittens is expected during the coming months, during what animal welfare organizations call “Kitten Season” and because of an over-abundance in long-timer dogs, dubbed “Lonely Hearts” once they have been in the shelter’s care for more than 30 days.
“We are urging our community to ‘Fall in Love’ with a new pet at this time of year,” said Tara High, H.S.S.M. Executive Director, “We have so many unwanted cats, kittens, and great dogs that need forever homes—and we hope to make plenty of matches over the next week.”
From September 22nd to September 27th, H.S.S.M. is offering a “Fall in Love” adoption special by waiving the adoption fee for all adoptable cats, kittens and “Lonely Heart” dogs and instead asking for a donation* to serve as an adoption fee.
All adoptions include:
-Your new pet
-Spay /Neuter
-Up-to-date Vaccinations
-Microchip & engraved ID tag
-Free vet exam within 7 days of adoption
-Gift of 30 days ShelterCare pet health insurance

This special is integral to H.S.S.M.’s efforts to continue saving more lives in our community. Each spring and fall, H.S.S.M., along with animal shelters across the nation (but especially in the South), experience spikes in the numbers of kittens entering their care. These spikes, known in the animal welfare field as “Kitten Season,” tend to overwhelm already full animal shelters and cause overcrowding, which oftentimes leads to illness, and therefore more euthanasia.
Adoption specials like the “Fall in Love” weekly promotion help to relieve some of this overcrowding and its tragic effects. In addition to the seasonal effects of “Kitten Season,” H.S.S.M. is currently home to more than 50 “Lonely Heart” dogs—dogs who have been in the shelter’s care for a long period of time—over 30 days—but generally several months.
H.S.S.M. is committed to ending unnecessary euthanasia of pets in our community and these two populations—cats and long-term shelter resident dogs—are at highest risk for euthanasia and depend on our community to save them.
