Extra Table Fundraiser November 16th
Fighting hunger while raising awareness about healthier food choices is what the nonprofit group Extra Table is all about and five South Mississippi mayors are using their culinary skills in the fight.
The day starts early at Feed my Sheep in Gulfport and for a good cause. Feed my Sheep Executive Director Randy Brownlee said, “We’re here to feed the hungry and the homeless and the needy people in our community just to ensure that they get a good healthy meal at least once a day Monday through Friday.”
Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes lent a hand Tuesday morning and will be putting his culinary skills to the test, paired with a celebrity chef, competing against four other South Mississippi mayors from Bay St. Louis to Pascagoula in this year’s Extra Table fundraiser on November 16th at the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino. “We became aware of this particular charity last year and the impact it would have on our food pantry and food pantries across the Coast. It was kind of a no brainer for all of us. You see a direct impact. I think out of last year’s proceeds we fed over 30,000 families across South Mississippi,” said Mayor Hewes.
On any given day, Feed my Sheep feeds about six hundred people throughout South Mississippi and that’s what this fundraiser is all about: serving food pantries across the Coast. Beau Rivage Public Relations Director Mary Spain said, “Extra Table is an organization that buys healthy food in bulk and provides it to the existing soup kitchens and food pantries. So, along the Gulf Coast, St. Gerard Outreach will benefit. Loaves and Fishes will benefit. Lord is my Help will benefit. Feed my Sheep and Our Daily Bread, it’s really a one coast event.”
The competition among the mayors taking part in this fundraiser is already heating up, Mayor Billy Hewes responding to Ocean Springs Mayor Shea Dobson’s assurance that he will edge out the other four South Mississippi mayors competing, including Mayor Hewes. “He’s young. He’s going to find out some things. Youth and exuberance are no match for old age and treachery, so we’ll just see how that plays out,” said Mayor Hewes.
