Excitement fills streets for MLK Day Parade

Martin Luther King Day is being celebrated all across the Coast. Numerous events took place in honor of the Civil Rights leader.
The MLK Parade in Gulfport is now over 30 years strong. News 25’s Gina Tomlinson takes us for a look at all the fun today.
Excitement filled the streets in Gulfport for the annual Martin Luther King Day Parade, marching just like the Civil Rights leader did decades ago fighting for equality. “Martin Luther King brought blacks and whites together.”
Families lined the streets watching floats, dancers, and catching beads and candy. Five-year-old Amari Martin from Pass Christian was having a great time. “I like the parade. It’s so pretty. I like the dancing girls. They are so beautiful.”
Celebrating Dr. King’s birthday, many organizations that focus on continuing the fight for equal rights took part in the parade, marching from downtown Gulfport to 38th Avenue. “We are the National Congress of Black Women for Jackson County.”
In between all the fun, the community honored all the great things Martin Luther King did for society. He would have been 89-years-old the day the parade rolled through Gulfport. “He changed the rules to make the world a better place.”
Gulfport resident Shermaine Preston said, “He had did so much for people to be equal and to understand why people shouldn’t judge somebody for what they look like. He’d be very proud because he would feel like he was very successful.”
