Everson Shares Ideas About What Will Affect Mississippians

Mark Everson of Gautier was cast into the spotlight Thursday when he announced is campaign to run for President of the United States. News 25 sat down with Everson to talk about the issues affecting south Mississippians most: the military, education, and unemployment. Everson’s name headlined many major news operations Thursday when he announced he’ll run for President.

Coming out with strong opinions on how to improve the nation, News 25 wanted to know which of these ideas will most affect Mississippians. Everson says, “I am calling to reinstate the draft and create a program of national service, and I’m doing that because my grandfather was in WWI, my dad, but we’ve lost that, that sense of community, and that sense of shared sacrifice.”

Everson says states like Mississippi, with several military bases and veteran services, are the ones sending soldiers overseas and then taking care of them when they return, but lawmakers are often living far from where those soldiers train. Everson also says, “It’s totally separate from the elites in Washington or New York. I think if we put the draft back in, that that will have a very real effect on our sense of community and our sense of patriotism.”

Another important topic for Mississippians is education and the battle over Common Core, which Everson supports. He says, “I think the federal government can and should communicate standards so that people across the country can understand what is being done elsewhere.” He also supports state-run workforce training programs that are tailored to the needs of the community.

Everson closes, “The federal training programs should be consolidated and the authority should give in to the governor to decide how to address problems, be it in Mississippi, on the Coast, in the Delta, in the north, wherever.”
