Endangered sea turtle nest on the beach in Pass Christian
Marine experts want to make sure beachgoers are aware of the endangered sea turtle nest on the beach in Pass Christian.
A rare logger head sea turtle has chosen to lay eggs on the beach about two miles east of the Pass Christian Harbor. Rescue workers at the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies sectioned the nest area off after being notified of the turtle this morning.
According to marine experts, it will be about 60 to 70 days before little baby turtles of this endangered species make their way to the water. Institute for Marine Mammal Studies Stranded Tech Lauren Cooley said, “We’re actually very excited about this nest here because this is a rare occurrence here on the mainland, most of the sea turtles here, nest out on the barrier islands. So, we only get one or two per year out here on the mainland. So, we’re excited to see this nest here in Pass Christian.”
Marine rescue workers are urging beachgoers to leave the nesting area alone until the eggs hatch. To report a sea turtle nest or mammal in distress call the institute’s stranded hotline at 1-888-767-3657.
