Emergency Training Exercise at Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport
It is every flyer’s worst nightmare. Today, Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport demonstrated a mock crash to give first responders practice in case of an emergency.
Volunteers were given tags of injury descriptions as if they were in a real-life plane crash. Over 10 agencies participated in the exercise, including Gulfport and Harrison County fire departments, AMR and the Mississippi Air National Guard.
Organizers of the event tell News 25 even though they pray something of this magnitude will never happen, they still need to be prepared. Exercise director Richard Rushing said, “We prepare for an event like this because it’s something that can happen. Aircraft accidents happen around the world. Hopefully, it won’t happen here but we want to be prepared when it does.”
Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport conducts this exercise once every three years.
