Elvis Week kicks off at Gulf Hills Hotel and Resort in Ocean Springs
OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (WXXV)- Elvis Week is officially getting all shook up in Ocean Springs. Gulf Hills Hotel and Resort is paying tribute to the King all week long, promising a rockin’ good time.
August 8 through the 16 is Elvis Week and Gulf Hills is making sure fans celebrate in true Elvis style.
Once home to Villa #9, where the King of Rock n Roll spent the summers of 1956 and 57, the hotel now honors his legacy with the ‘Love me Tender’ Suite, a tribute built in the spirit of that historic hideaway.
Throughout the property, you will spot statues, vintage photographs, a piano Elvis used to play, and so much more.
The hotel started the celebration Friday with a Blue Suede Kickoff Party and continued Sunday with an Elvis brunch featuring a live performance by an Elvis impersonator.
One staff member explains why it is important for the hotel and resort to celebrate. General Manager Mary Katherine Filipich said, “Well Elvis, this is where he would come and stay to spend his summer. It would be his escape; he would water ski and have the best time here. He had a summer romance here back in the 1950s with June Juanico, he was just planting his roots here he made this little corner of Ocean Springs his home and a place where he could relax, and he built this great history here. So, we really want to pay homage to that and recreate that. We know that Elvis fans are always around and they come and swarm. So, we think that just to do him justice and do this hotel justice that we need to honor him during Elvis Week.”
