Eighth annual Avenue of Flags Ceremony honoring veterans

The City of Gautier reminds us of the true reason of Memorial Day.

Earlier today, the American Legion Post of 1992 held their eighth annual Avenue of Flags Ceremony. This program was set up for family and friends to dedicate a flag as a way to honor their veteran who has passed away.

Coordinator Paul Mohning brought the ceremony to Gautier after honoring his father with a flag in Le Mars, Iowa. “It’s a program that’s near and dear to my heart. Growing up as a kid, Memorial Day just meant a three-day weekend and that school was out so it was time to go fishing. Once I entered the service, followed in my dad’s footsteps, it created a whole new meaning for me.”

Five flags were dedicated by family and loved ones at today’s ceremony. With these new additions, there are now 56 flags in place honoring the lives of veterans.

All of the flags will be properly stowed at 6 tonight at the legion until next year’s ceremony.
