Educators Gather to Stop Illiteracy

The Mississippi Reading Association is composed of educators who come together to fight illiteracy. This year, they’re huddling up on the Coast.
Since Sunday, educators from across the state have been at the conference on literacy. The event has drawn over 600 to the Beau Rivage, all wanting to eliminate illiteracy.
Participants have been able to speak with nationwide vendors such as McGraw-Hill, as well as listen to speakers from California, Maryland and Mississippi.
Cortez Moss, member of the MRA Conference Committee, said, “The philosophy of MRA and this conference is practitioners know best. So teachers from across the state have been presenting what they’re doing in their classrooms. School leaders have been showing what they’re doing in their building and at their district level.”
MRA Conference Chair Dr. Sherry Shepard said, “We have connected with early childhood educators, elementary teachers, secondary teachers and even the community college arena. They have joined to learn best strategies for teaching literacy in our schools and in our respective areas.”
In the past, the conference has moved around but they plan to be right back on the Coast next year.
