Education Program for Inmates in Jackson County

Some inmates in Jackson County are using their time inside to prepare them for life on the outside.
Fifty-six inmates signed up for classes in the high school equivalency program since August. Inmates are pre-tested to determine their education levels. They spend four hours a day, two days a week, learning social studies, reading, writing, science and math. Students are given five proficiency exams to pass the course. Even if the inmate is sentenced while in school, they are allowed to finish the program.
Sheriff Mike Ezell says the partnership gives the inmates an educational opportunity that many of them never had before.
