Education Day at MGM Park

As the school year comes to a close, the Biloxi Shuckers found a fun way to interact with local schools. Going for their third win in a row, the Shuckers invited schools and their students to come on by and enjoy a game.

When given the option to be in school or at a baseball game what would you choose? Fourth grader Madison Jacobs said, “Obviously the baseball game. I don’t want to do iReady now.”

Madison and the rest of her Pass Christian Elementary School classmates enjoyed their day at the Shuckers ‘Education Day.’ Sales Executive Kory Dumond said, “What we’re trying to do is just engage the youth in the area, around the community. Give them an opportunity to come out to a Shuckers game when maybe they wouldn’t have been able to do that.”

Vendors were on hand from NASA, the Hattiesburg Zoo, and more, all to interact with the students who are just days removed from statewide testing. Teacher Tammy Hood said, “Testing is a real stressful time. The kids were so excited about today. A lot of the kids haven’t been to a game or even out of maybe the Pass Christian area. They’re just like ‘it’s a free day.’ They can’t believe it. Everyone agrees that it’s the best day ever.”

But the best part of Education Day is the opportunity to relax. “You know we have to be all about the rules all the time. We represent a really high quality, excellent school district and we live up to that. On a day like this they can kind of let their hair down and have fun.”

“I don’t have to be quiet in the classroom now. I can talk. I don’t have to be quiet!”
