East Central tight end inks with Mississippi State
College football’s first ever early signing period kicked off this morning at 7 o’clock sharp and shortly thereafter, East Central tight end Brad Cumbest officially made himself a division I athlete.
The star tight end of the Hornets put pen to paper with Mississippi State while sitting in the comfort of his own home surrounded by family. Cumbest made history in the process as the first East Central player to ever sign a national letter of intent with the Bulldogs. He’s also the first from Hurley to receive an SEC scholarship since 1976.
According to the Sun Herald, Alabama and Arkansas made contact with Cumbest late in the recruiting process, but he never really wavered from the commitment he made back in June.
In 2017, the 6’6 matchup nightmare led his Hornets to the 4A state title game for the first time in program history. Cumbest was also the only player from the Magnolia State to play in both the Bernard Blackwell Classic and the Mississippi-Alabama All Star Game.
Cumbest joins a top 20 signing day class featuring 14 other standout recruits with two days of the early period still left to go. Likewise, Ole Miss and Southern Miss locked up 15 players of their own and the JUCO’s were pretty busy as well.
Mississippi Gulf Coast sent 13 guys to the next level and 14 for Pearl River.
